I’m listening to this podcast right now and it’s amazing. The first thing I wanted to say is thank you for making it. I’m often blown away by your interviews but this one has been particularly touching and powerful for me. Which brings me on to the second thing I want to say….Have you ever considered posting ‘trigger warnings’ with your podcasts?
I appreciate your podcasts are aimed at therapists whose training is in dealing with traumatic and disturbing material and being aware of their traumas and conditioning. However my personal experience, which I am sure I’m not alone in, is that that work can be an ongoing process with many stages of unfolding.
While hearing this podcast has been deeply helpful to my own journey with healing the sexual trauma I have experienced, I am very grateful that I chanced to listen to it on a quiet day I had in my own home. Hearing it in the context of my commute to work or before a social gathering could have rendered me helpless and an emotional wreck for a the period, dealing with material that had been put upon me without my informed consent and leaving me too overwhelmed to support myself to process it or function normally in my surroundings. Strong words person, but for survivors of sexual abuse and trauma (which this podcast makes are no rarity in our community) it is easy for seemingly small things to seriously reflect and re-trigger those traumatic experiences.
I so enjoyed the podcast that I have sent it to many friends, including those that I’m aware have survived their own experiences of sexual trauma. However, I have also let them all know that they can expect to hear details and discussion of sexual abuse and trauma as well as alcohol and drug missuse.
This means that if they choose to listen to it they will know what is involved in that choice and will have the opportunity to ensure their internal and external landscapes are prepared to support that choice.
I ask that you all consider offering this information and the choice it creates to your listeners. My suggestion is to use trigger warnings on this and any other podcasts you publish . I imagine this idea isn’t new to you, but I’d love you to get I touch with me if you wanted to discuss the idea any further or consider where trigger warnings might be due. Although I imagine you can appreciate the psychological rational for this request I’d hoped like to link you to article going into more detail. The internet is flooded on those from an educational rather than psychological perspective (perhaps I should write one) hower the New York Times article ‘Why I Use Trigger Warnings’ is not unhelpful.
I will be deeply grateful for your consideration of this topic and hearing from you or seeing the changes on your releases. Again, if you’d like any support in this, please do get in touch.
Very best wishes
Jessica Murray.
