I’m glad Dr. Robert called gratitude an attitude, rather than a feeling or emotion. Although attitudes such as gratitude, guilt or shame can also be felt as an emotion. So many “Law of Attraction” type people talk as if we can manufacture emotions such as happiness, when actually we can only cultivate attitudes which often lead to feeling pleasurable emotions like happiness.
He had an interesting take on forgiveness. Since I consider forgiveness to be a move in a positive direction from judging/fault finding to acceptance/allowing/equanimity. I see gratitude as the next higher level in a continuation of the forgiveness process.
Self improvement is a myth. Every person is and always has been perfect. We just come here to experience the illusion of imperfection. To reduce our minds of the persistent habit of negativity we need gratitude to replace that habit with something more real and true.
