Dr. Dave and, his good friend, Jerry Trumbule, chat about a variety of topics relating to science and psychology on the first of a series of periodic “live,” listener call-in shows. The conversation ranges through such topics as iTunes University and the democratization of information and education, age bias in market research and the growing involvement of older folks on the Internet, a report that video games can enhance the spatial-reasoning skills among women, the impact of viruses upon human evolution and behavior, Dr. Steven Pinker and the impact of language on thought and consciousness, Dr. Irene Pepperberg’s research on “The Model-Rival Technique” with Alex, the recently deceased African Grey parrot, and research on people claiming to have been abducted by aliens.

John Mack is the Harvard psychiatrist that Dr. Dave mentioned in this discussion – an interesting discussion, thanks guys! I think the subject of alien abductions goes along with what they were talking about, how the scientific community is often resistant to new discoveries because they do not fit the old paradigms, but there comes a point of acceptance, and then it’s, ‘Oh we knew that all along.’
Jerry, you rock and you guys are trouble together LOL.
oops I meant Jerry…
I just listened to the first of your live shows and it was really fun! You guys have a great flow together.
You spoke (among other things) about the many creatures that we carry with us in our bodies, viruses, bacteria, parasites, and so on.
That reminded me of a book I always wanted to read, but I didn’t come around to yet.
The book is named “Human Wildlife” and it is written by Robert Buckman. It’s a journey through our body and describes all the “inhabitants” we carry with us. It seems to contain also very many “pretty” pictures of our “companions” 🙂
Just one of the many interesting facts of the book: Your body has 100 trillion cells, but only 10 trillion are human. Did you have the same “yuck reaction” while reading this as I had? 🙂
The chapters have illuminating titles: “Planet Human”, “The Meaning of Lice”, “In Your Face”, “The Worm’s Turn”, “Repulsive Invaders”, “The Origin of Feces”, “Fellow Travelers” and “One World”
I have to read this one soon, it seems to be so wonderfully disturbing *g*
