Deb Dana LCSW writes: “My work as a clinician, consultant, lecturer, and Coordinator of the Traumatic Stress Research Consortium in the Kinsey Institute is focused on using the lens of Polyvagal Theory to understand and resolve the impact of trauma and create ways of working that honor the role of the autonomic nervous system as we move through states of protection and connection in an ongoing quest for safety.” She is coeditor, with Stephen Porges, of Clinical Applications of The Polyvagal Theory: The Emergence of Polyvagal-Informed Therapies and the author of The Polyvagal Theory in Therapy: Engaging The Rhythm of Regulation

Deb Dana is now my new personal hero. I love the work she is doing and I can hardly wait to try these new (my term) brain hack techniques on myself. I know it is going to be great and I really need it right now.
I have this weird symptom that some people with bad trauma get where all food becomes truly repugnant. I have been getting desperate and frustrated but is seems like it could be the key to setting my body to “we’re okay now” mode.
This is one of your most important episodes for me. I finally have a clear picture of how polyvagal theory works. I’m a fellow freeze-brain victim so I really can relate to you there. Have you heard of using measurement of heart rate variability (HRV) to determine if a person is in her/his optimum autonomic state. HRV is caused by the vagal brake slowing our heart rate when we exhale. If we are in sympathetic arousal or freeze, the vagal brake from breathing is not in effect. Therapy using HRV uses breath and also imagining a safe person or place to improve the HRV, which I guess would mean the client is in ventral vagal.
One thing I would love to hear you ask someone who has the level of understanding Ms. Dana seems to have is: Are many people who have an anxiety disorder stuck in sympathetic and are many people who have depression disorders stuck in dorsal vagal???
I shared this show on my old MSW classmates Facebook page. I’m currently waiting for an insurance companie’s clearance to start billing clients at an agency I am contracting with to start my new career. A career that will be much better informed because of you.
Thanks,
