I was a little surprised to hear Dr Gottman make the comment that ‘domestic violence is more damaging to females’.
Whilst I understand there is some research to support that the prevalence of domestic abuse and violence is more common where females are victims I am unaware of any evidence that the damage it causes is different between the sexes.
I would be interested in any research in this area. I am concerned that sometimes people make these statements that further reinforce the myth that partner abuse is not a serious issue where males are victims. This societal view has the potential to further victimise men who already have trouble reaching out for help.
Thanks for posting another marriage related interview. The Gottmans sound like a sure bet for the best up to date info on what helps couples.
There are some therapists who work with individuals to improve their marriage. Dr David Burns who wrote Felling Good Together is one who seems to be okay with it. A good therapist isn’t going to be hoodwinked into siding with a complaining spouse.
Thanks,
Rich
