   Just listened to this excellent interview with Dr David Feinstein. It was refreshing to have a sober, informal conversation about ‘Energy Psychology’.

   Often times talks about EFT and other ‘unconventional’ processes degenerate into an argument between the devotees (it always works on everything) vs the detractors (it never works on anything). So it was a delight to hear your intelligent and balanced conversation about the possibilities and difficulties of these techniques.

   I was particularly interested the thorny issue of inadequately trained practitioners biting off far more than they can chew. In the aftermath of disasters such as the dreadful school shooting I think there is a danger of (well-meaning) fools rushing in where angels fear to tread. I was pleased to hear Dr Feinstein’s well considered response to those concerns.

   As an EFT practitioner and trainer I think EFT and similar processes have a lot to offer (but I would say that wouldn’t I? 🙂 However getting conventionally trained professionals to entertain using it is no small task. I suspect the journey from lunatic fringe to mainstream may take a little while yet, but it’s a very interesting journey.

   There is every reason to approach “energy” healing with a great deal of skepticism. I listened carefully but, other than some easy lip service, I did not hear any methodical analysis of the practical efficacy of this “therapy”. To be direct, I am very concerned to hear two PhDs advocating long debunked quackery on a podcast listened to by the unaware general public. There is even the suggestion that dishonesty with trauma victims is preferable to continued distress. Within the realm of therapy this is highly unethical.
   At the very minimum I expected the interviewer to ask some difficult questions to test the claims of the guest, considering the scope of his assertions. I felt more like I was sitting in on a yoga information class than an academic discussion.
   I may, if I have more time, come back to this episode and go through the material point by point.
   You have honestly worried me.

   Thank you for directing me to the links within the show notes. Unfortunately, after spending some time scanning through them, I am now alarmed at the completely unwarranted claims being delivered by Dr Feinstein. My initial assessment is that Energy Therapy operates no differently, from what I am reading, than an intense past life regression session or hysterical church healing. I will eventually have more time to sort through the details but, to a more skilled skeptical eye this is a practice using emotional deception to elicit a conditioned state of mind. Dr Feinstein’s own words describe a clear confirmation bias from the beginning of his conversion which is wholly unacceptable, particularly since many vulnerable patients within the general public put great trust in anyone with a PhD. Again, when time permits I promise to go over the material much closer.

   I use WordPress and highly recommend it. I hired a company to set it up for me and make it look the way I wanted and then WP is easy enough for me to maintain and update myself.
