Anna Fels

Anna Fels, M.D. is an alumna of Harvard College where she graduated with high honors. Following a post-graduate year as a researcher at the Brigham Hospital in Boston, she attended the Harvard Medical School. Dr. Fels received her medical specialty and subspecialty training at New York Presbyterian Hospital. During her fellowship she did research at the Laboratory of Immunology and Cellular Physiology at Rockefeller University. Upon completing her fellowship, Dr. Fels joined the clinical faculty at New York Presbyterian hospital as well as the faculty of the Cornell Medical School. Dr.Fels subsequently joined the full time faculty at Memorial Hospital for Cancer and Allied Diseases.
In 1989 Dr. Fels changed fields, retraining to become a psychiatrist. While doing a second residency at the Payne Whitney Clinic of New York Hospital, she won several awards, including the prestigious Laughlin Fellowship from the American College of Psychiatrists. Currently Dr. Fels is a practicing psychiatrist and a faculty member of the Weill Medical College of Cornell University and of the New York Presbyterian Hospital. She has written on medical and psychiatric topics for publications that include The New York Times Book Review, the Times Literary Supplement (London), The Nation, M.D. Magazine and the Science Times and Sunday Review sections of The New York Times.

Throughout her career, Dr. Fels has focused on issues involving the roles of women in the workplace. Her book Necessary Dreams: Ambition in Women’s Changing Lives was published in the spring of 2004 (Pantheon) and reissued in paperback in 2005 (Anchor). The book has been excerpted in the Harvard Business Review (April 2004), and the exerpt was republished by the Harvard Business Review in their “OnPoint Collection” series. Dr. Fels has also contributed a chapter to “The Mommy Wars” (Random House 2006).

Dr. Fels has lectured widely on issues facing contemporary women for academic institutions and non-profit organizations including The World Bank and the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University; she has made presentations at numerous corporations including Citicorp, Lehman Brothers, Goldman Sachs, Ernst & Young and AOL Time Warner. Interviews of Dr. Fels have appeared on National Public Radio, Canadian Television, and in Time Magazine.
